Defrosting Polar Dunes -- "The Snow Leopard"

The spots are areas where dark sand has been exposed from beneath bright frost as the south polar winter cap begins to retreat. 

And no one knows for sure why some dunes show spots that appear to be "lined-up".

These micro cells appear to be following some set of rules in their placement, which is typical for colonies of living organisms.

Good Real Estate Is All About Location

The final characteristic we have noticed about these micro cells is their location.  The majority of all well sized and structured cells have all been found in the depths of craters. 

Our Theories Confirmed

As fate would have it, mid-way through our investigation and cataloguing of images for this article, we came across a recent news report confirming our original suspicions that what we were seeing in these images was biological, not lifeless dust.

Hungarian scientists claim potential evidence of life on Mars

Large groups of dark spots in the southern craters of Mars which spread every Martian spring could prove there is life on Mars, Hungarian scientists said Friday. 

"The organisms live between the surface of Mars and a thick ice cover that isolates them extremely well from Martian temperatures of around minus 120 degrees Celsius," Ganti told AFP. 

"When the spring comes and light penetrates the ice, these organisms absorb the energy of light and warm up themselves.  Under the ice, temperatures rise to slightly above zero.  A thin inner layer of the ice melts, thus creating the conditions of life." 

"In the summer, when the whole ice cover melts and the water evaporates, they dry out again." He said. 

"A lot of arguments support the conclusions that these are living organisms and so far nothing has been raised against it." 

"This could be the first evidence of life on Mars," he said. 

The Future Of Life

A leader from the European Space Agency's Mars Express Program has already visited the Hungarian team to express interest in their findings.  Will NASA show an interest and give credit to their findings, or unscientifically stick to their guns and ignore valuable data like in previous life on Mars debates? 

This investigation should not be closed and written into history books as dark dust.  If these macro and micro cells are proven to be related and indeed biological in nature, then contamination investigations of Mars and Earth need to be carried out.  We will need to determine if any kind of threat exists with sending probes to Mars and returning samples that could potentially bring back a previously unknown form of life.  Similarly, we do not want to destroy possibly the last form of life left on this cold icy planet.
