Geoengineering Solutions

While there are many legitimate efforts being undertaken to change our damaging ways, others want to change nature instead. Geoengineering is the attempt at reducing undesired climatic changes through the intentional large-scale manipulation of our environment.

Explicit consideration of human alterations to the global climate was first entertained in the late 1900s. This old and unwise concept was explored further in the 1960s and 1970s as our destructive influences began to manifest in dramatically increasing rates. Today, we have the technology to tackle the global warming issue without further altering the fragile stability of our climate systems. However, many people are still seriously considering geoengineering.

Some methods to geoengineer our planet include:

• Sequestration of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels
• Injecting aerosols into the Earths stratosphere
• Adding phosphate fertilizers to the oceans
• Adding iron fertilizers to the oceans
• Space-based shields
• Afforestation

Why It Should Not Happen

Is our knowledge of planetary systems comprehensive enough to guarantee no unintended consequences will result from any geoengineering scenario?

Tulane University mechanical engineer Robert Watts was the editor of the proceedings of the 1992 conference called "The Engineering Response to Global Climate Change". Watts said, "We really don't understand the climate well enough, so we don't want to start something where the cure might be worse than the disease."

Josh Tosteson was a curriculum coordinator at the original Biosphere 2 experiment. He believes that the problems the Biospherians faced with oxygen loss and carbon dioxide increases was an excellent case study for geoengineering.

Biosphere 2 proved that, "we don't have the intellectual resources at the limit to solve problems of this complexity. I think it illuminated just how difficult it is to do conscious management of a little mini-world."

If we could not manage a miniature world operating under controlled conditions, how on this Earth do people expect to safely geoengineer a large living planet?

Lets Spend Our Money Wisely

Michael MacCracken, director of the Office of the US Global Change Research Program in Washington DC believes that enormous amounts of money involved to research and develop a geoengineering solution would be better spent on developing alternative power sources.

Oregon State University plant pathologist Christ Mundt recently said, "I think our goal should be to fool with Mother Nature as little as possible. Sometimes there is a simple fundamental fix that makes a whole lot more sense than going for real high-tech system."

Like a bad doctor, geoengineering does nothing more than treat the shallow symptoms instead of the deep-rooted causes.

Conclusion

Past research and theories should not be condemned or used to discredit those that continue to dedicate their lives to the health of our planet and future. Their knowledge at that time was based on the best available data that continues to increase daily. Today we know that we are not the primary cause of global warming. However, we are significant contributors. We may even be the straw that breaks the camels back.

We are now being presented with two options for our future. We can continue on the narrow fleeting path and make dangerous attempts to mutate nature’s methods of billions of years, or we can change our energy sources to ensure unpolluted endless supplies for our future.

We cannot let unnecessary politics stand in the way of our dream to bestow a healthy and safe planet to our children.
